My name is Tammy and I am enrolled in the ECE program at Northwestern. I started this adventure 15 years ago. I got married and had a baby and put off returning to College. I have 4 boys now who are all in school and decided it was time for me to finish what I started. I have volunteered in my children's classes and love the teaching environment. My favorite things to do is read to the children, being animated and making the story come alive is fun for me. I also enjoy doing art projects with the children, watching their creativity I believe every child is unique and deserves a chance to learn and have fun while learning.

I want to teach because it is something I have always wanted to do. I have always been around children and love hearing there stories and adventures. I thought about not coming back to school but my son's pre-k teacher really encouraged me to go back, I volunteered in her classroom for two years and she was always amazed at how at ease I am with the children and how they all always would flock to whatever area I was helping with while I was there. I treat all the children as if they were mine. I always hope for my own children to have a wonderful school experience and do the same for others.

My philosophy of working with children is let them lead you. Teach about what interest them. If we teach to their needs and their likes they will be eager to learn. Let curiosity lead the way, if we can fit the children's idea's into the curriculum then they will be learning without even knowing.  I aim to set a good example for the children I teach, a do as I do attitude. Children can always use good examples to model from. If we are honest with one another then the children feel comfortable. Children like to tell on everyone who is doing something wrong but if we are kind to those who admit there own wrong doing they learn honesty is the best policy. This will help them become more honest and responsible adults. Hard work is very important. When children see us doing the not so glamorous jobs, they learn we all have to do things that we may not want to. I sometimes have a tendency to just take over, I am learning to sit back and let the other teachers also join in. I think that comes from me being a mom, I just want everything to flow perfectly. I understand the need for disruption and chaos and I am slowly adapting.

I look forward to completing my degree in August 2012.  I am enjoying Student Teaching. At first I thought I just wanted to substitute teach but now I am thinking of having my own classroom. Only time will tell where this adventure will lead me.
